WHAT STARTED AS A COMMITMENT TO SERVE HIS COMMUNITY QUICKLY GREW INTO A LIFELONG CALLING. IN MARCH OF 1996, CAPTAIN RICH BECAME ONE OF THE FIRST THREE FULL TIME FIREFIGHTERS HIRED HERE IN BAY COUNTY. THE FIREFIGHTERS FIRE SERVICES. FROM THOSE EARLY DAYS FORWARD, HE HELPED SHAPE THE DEPARTMENT'S FUTURE, WHICH CONTINUALLY SHARPENING HIS SKILLS, EARNING HIS HAZMAT TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE CERTIFICATION, EMT LICENSE AND FIRE OFFICER CERTIFICATION, ULTIMATELY PROMOTING TO FIRE CAPTAIN. WHILE HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE MANY.CAPTAIN RICH IS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS PASSION FOR WILDLAND FIREFIGHTING, HIS DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY, HIS DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF FORESTRY AND WILDFIRE OPERATIONS MADE HIM AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE BOTH AT HOME AND ON DEPLOYMENTS TO MAJOR WILDFIRE INCIDENTS.
